How was everyone's weekend? Well, I said I was going to clean and do some DIY projects this weekend and that's what I did! I feel like if I share these ideas with the world, then it kind of pushes me and inspires me to actually get them done! So, if you remember two weeks ago I shared with you our lovely, yet boring lamp shade...

We've had this lamp for about three or four years now, and for the last year or so I kept looking at it and thinking that there must be something I could do so it wouldn't be so dull and boring. In my first post about the shade I shared a few ideas I like; one using Shape Tape™ to create a wave design, writing a love note around it, or perhaps forgo a shade to give the lamp an industrial look.

Well, after seeing this post on my friend Katie's blog Busy Bee Kate, I was at first inspired to find fabric tape to decorate the shade the easy way. So, I ventured to Michaels Arts & Crafts Store yesterday and could not find any fabric tape...perhaps I was looking in the wrong place? Any how, I did stumble upon the Martha Stewart aisle, which I love...and who doesn't...and that's where I found her beautiful stencils. Right then and there I knew that was the DIY project for my lamp shade...

Did I mention that my brave hubby came along for this DIY adventure with me? We could not decide on a pattern and kept comparing them and trying to figure out the perfect stencil for our style. That's when we found the Martha Stewart Crafts™ Geometric Patterns that had a stenciled lamp shade on the cover! I was done, even if he wasn't...I was! 

It's funny I was going to title my post, "How to Stencil a Lamp Shade", as you can see in my photo above, but I came to the conclusion that, "The Adventures of a Lamp Shade Makeover" was more suitable! As you'll see below, I forgot to grab some painter's tape or as I just learned on Michaels' website, Martha Stewart Crafts™ Stencil Tape!

Do you recognize the type of tape I tried to use to hold my stencil in place? Yep, that's washi tape! It wasn't a very successful choice, so while the first line of geometric shapes were drying I ventured over to Home Depot for ScotchBlue™ painter's tape. I was surprised to find out that painter's tape wasn't sticking to the shade either, was I doing something wrong?! 

The paint we chose was Martha Stewart Crafts™ Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic in Deep Sea. I used a stencil foam pouncer as they call it, to dab on the paint. 

Here she is, the before and after! What do you think? It was an interesting adventure in giving a lamp shade a makeover, but I'm really glad I pushed myself to not be afraid to try something new. I really love the way it turned out, the color works perfectly too. The stencil job isn't perfect, but it doesn't have to be! For my first stencil work on a lamp shade, I'm pretty proud of her! 

I have a few DIY bloggers who inspired me that I want to thank. One of them, or two I should say, is Monica and Jess from East Coast Creative. I went to a local ladies' night event they were hosting before I became their blog assistant and something they said stuck with me. It's not word for word but it was something about the biggest obstacle we have in DIY and home decor, is being afraid to fail, being afraid to try, and just having fear of jumping in. So, ladies lets get rid of that fear and pick up a paint brush!

Another blogger I would like to thank is my friend Tairalyn over at Little Miss Mama. She is one amazing woman. She's a mom to an almost three year old, and blogs about motherhood, fashion, homemade recipes, sewing her own gorgeous tulle skirts...she does it all! We "met" online a few years ago and she has since become a top Vancouver Mama Blogger and top Fashion blogger. She inspires me to want more out of my own blog and out of myself. YOU ROCK GIRL!

I also want to thank my girl Katie over at Busy Bee Kate, have you checked us out on Facebook? When we reach 100 likes we're hosting a blog giveaway together! Katie introduced me to a local women's business group when I first moved to the area a few years ago and I would be lost without it and her! 

One more is my sweet girl Heather over at High Heels & Flip-Flops! She's a night owl like myself, so whenever I'm up late and need to talk she's always there to listen. She's an amazing friend, I'm so glad we got the chance to meet in person last year. I can't wait to hang out again.

She Will Move Mountains...

I have recently discovered the wonderful world of free printables that many DIY bloggers create, whether they are for holidays, birthdays, or just have words of inspiration on them. So, I thought I would use the photo editor site Pic Monkey to create my own...

As you can see I made two versions, one with white mountain tops and one without! I was searching for inspiring quotes and stumbled upon this one and now have fallen in love with it. Did you know that it may have originated with Napoleon who said, "Let China sleep, for when she wakes she will shake the world"? So somewhere in between what he said and now it has been translated to "Let her sleep, for when she wakes she will move mountains". 

The mountains I am hoping to move this weekend are the ones that need to be sold for our Summer garage sale! We just have too much stuff in this house; stuff from when the girls were little, from my college days, and just junk lying around that is collecting dust that no one cares about any more. So, this weekend I am hoping to get a start on what to donate, what to put in the garage sale, and what should just be tossed. 

What mountains are you moving this weekend, next week, this year? For this year, I am planning on moving my blog over to WordPress and getting an entire new design with fun social media buttons. I really want to make something out of my blog instead of just letting it sit. I love what I do and I'm learning so much, but I'm more of a behind the scenes person on other blogs and only share round up lists on AWS. I want people to see me and to learn more about who I am and what goes on in "The World Around Her". So stick around, I plan on moving big mountains this year!

Fun and Creative Mason Jar Craft Ideas

My step-daughter keeps getting on me about my collection of empty mason jars, telling me that I NEED to do something with them! So, I have finally searched on Pinterest and found a few fun and creative mason jar craft ideas that I would like to DIY, however there are a few jars I have that I won't touch though or change...

Besides the one that obviously doesn't look like the rest, these are my vintage mason jars and they are staying as is! I love the glass lids and the handles. I'm not sure when they date back to, but I just discovered this mason jar logo image during a Google search...

It's a little tough to decipher between a few of the logo dates, from 1896-1960 they look pretty similar. But with the way the curve comes off the B in Ball, it looks like mine may be from 1933-1960. That right there is the reason no one is going to touch these vintage mason jars I have in my collection, I mean it's pretty amazing to have something that has that kind of history! I only wish there were more information on the jar so I could actually discover where it may have come from. 

So other than these jars, I also have a few in my collection that are a little newer and easier to find...

A few of them have the little ® on it meaning that they are from 1975 to present according to the logo image, however I just noticed that one of them has the same B on it as my glass lid jars and may also be from 1933-1960! (PS, the owl drawing was made by my step-daughter and the owl stitched hoop was made by Jennifer over at Homespun Happiness, she's a sweetheart!)

As you can see from the photo above, a few of the jars have my rubber stamp collection in them, two of them are empty, and the blue one has small pieces of paper in it. A friend had posted at the beginning of this year an idea on Facebook of writing down little notes of when you have a great day and then keeping the notes in jar. Then on New Year's Eve you open the jar and share all of your favorite memories with everyone. I don't always remember to do so, but when I do it's something really good! I can't wait to look back at 2014 on New Year's Eve with my family! 

For the larger empty jars I am considering going with either a terrarium or a more craft inspired idea ....

All of these ideas just make me smile, especially that angry gnome! Terrariums seem to be trending big time now that Spring is finally here. I love the pop of colorful stones in the two succulent mason jar ideas, those two are my favorite. The beach mason jar is a fun idea as well, I actually have a few vases from my sister's wedding that have sand and sea shells in them and just love how they look.

How sweet is the heart stenciled out on the chalkboard painted mason jar? I also love the distressed painted mason jar look, it gives the new jars a more vintage look. The globe mason jar idea has been floating around on Pinterest for a few years now, and every holiday season when it pops up again I keep saying I'm going to make one! How adorable is the vintage car with the tree tied to the top?!

So, perhaps one of the jars will get a terrarium makeover, while the other becomes a globe? Do you have any empty mason jars or have you created any of these fun mason jar craft ideas before?

Creative Ways to Decorate for Spring

It seems that Mother Nature is confused because we are supposed to get a few inches of snow today, but I'm pushing forward and still on the look for creative ways to decorate for Spring! I don't have many decorations for this time of year, heck I don't even have a Spring wreath! Plus, the only decor I have around the house doesn't really shout, "It's Springtime"; a few plants, my cherished teddies, owls (of course!), and a huge smiling rustic sun that I hang outside to greet our guests isn't going to cut it! I want get more creative and really brighten things up after the long winter we've experienced this year. Here are a few ideas I discovered by searching Pinterest that I'm obsessing over...

So, I showed this garden hose wreath from Create. Craft. Love to the hubby and he wasn't seeing the same unique and quirky Spring wreath idea I was seeing! What do you think? Is it too out of the box or is it just right? 

I love the fabric flower wreath from Digital Designs Scrapbooking with the little blue wooden bird and picture frame, it's cheerful and perfect for Spring and Summer. Do you think it has too much going on, or would you leave it just as is?

I have seen these fabric ball wreaths trending during the winter holiday season, but haven't really seen too many for Spring and Summer until I stumbled upon this one from The Love Nerds. This color combination is one of my favorites, it was actually our wedding colors and they have since been my favorite colors for Spring. 

How can you not love this amazing succulent wreath from Garden Therapy, am I right? It looks like a lot of time was put into creating this beauty. I had a succulent plant my mom purchased one year at the Philadelphia Flower Show, but sadly it didn't last. Any tips on taking care of succulents?!

It's really amazing what a little spray paint, a few stencils, and rope can do to change the look of a boring planter! 

This southwest painted tiered planter DIY is from last year, but arrows are still trending so you can't go wrong with going the southern route with this idea from East Coast Creative. 

I recently wrote a post for AWS about DIY rope decor ideas, still waiting for it to go live and will update you with that link! But, who knew rope could be so much fun and bring new life to a simple planter?! I love that blogger April from House by Hoff  painted her rope to give it even more character.

Sometimes a table runner is all you need to bring new life to a boring tablescape....

I had a really cute table runner for the holiday season, but currently my table only has a single plant sitting on it...not very creative! 

This first table runner was created using paint stinks....the ideas people come up with are just mind blowing! I love the herringbone pattern that was created, by Amanda over on Ruffled it gives it more of a creative design element then just gluing them side by side for the table runner. 

How adorable is this paper pinwheel table runner from Green Wedding Shoes? I'm not sure how long it would last in a household full of children, but if you are looking for a table runner for the Spring holidays that would really impress your guests, this would be a great one!

Happies and Crappies: Breast Cancer Awareness

It's a pretty happy week all around, a little busy and hectic, but overall this has been a very happies kind of week. So let's just roll out to the link up with Steph and Amber shall we...

Happies: 

1. I'm pretty proud of myself for sticking to my goals for this week and really putting in the effort to keep my personal blog updated and starting a Facebook page for it! When I reach 100 likes I'm going to host a giveaway here with my wonderful friend Katie who just started her own personal blog, check her out at Busy Bee Kate! 

2. My birthday gift from the hubby came in the mail today! 

How fabulous is my Atutudes tutu!! I can't wait to wear it for the Philadelphia Mother's Day Race for the Cure breast cancer walk. Last year was my first time participating in the Susan G. Komen 5K and I saw so many fabulous tutus. That got me thinking about Kristal over at Atutudes, I just knew she was the right woman to contact! Kristal is a sweetheart, and if you want to feel like a Princess too then she is your girl! PS, I'm also wearing my Mila Rose Designs floral headband in this photo, Melis is another sweety and she is going to be giving away one of her headbands when I reach 100 likes on my Facebook page along with some goodies from others! 

Here we are last year at the walk...

We were supporting one of my sister's friends from high school who recently battled breast cancer, she is in the bottom right photo between my sister and I. Unbelievable and scary to think that someone my age is dealing with this. She is doing very well though and recently got married and had a beautiful baby girl! I was also there to honor a very close family friend we lost last February, the beautiful Cindy Fallon...

She was only 53 years old. I think about her often, and especially around this time of year. Her family participates in the For Pete's Sake Cancer Walk at Citizen's Bank Park where the Phillies play. It's a wonderful cause, For Pete's Sake helps cancer patients and their families take a break from cancer and sends them on vacation. 

Crappies: 

1. Well, it did start out as a happy post, and still is because I know Cindy is no longer suffering, but breast cancer and all cancers need a cure. So that's my crappies for the week and pretty much until we find a cure. It's so terrifying to hear that word. 

To speak honestly here...this week just before my cycle (ladies you know what I'm talking about!), I was feeling very sore, and on the one side it was more painful than the other. I started thinking what if, but then I did some research and learned that breast cancer lumps aren't usually painful, however there is something called Mastalgia. I thought "Great this is something that is going to occur once a month?!" So you're asking what is it? Well, between the ages of 30 to 50 a woman may experience some pain and heaviness in her breasts just before her cycle, lucky us right?! However, there can also be a non-cycle pain caused by a cyst or a fibroadenoma. So, ladies either way, no matter what is going on and if you think you feel something or if you are experiencing this pain, you should keep up with your yearly appointments and get anything serious checked out. Early detection saves live. I am pretty sure it's just this cycle type of pain that is occurring but I do have my yearly check up next month.

DIY Lamp Shade Ideas...

So now that I'm trying to boost my personal blog, I'm starting to think like an actual blogger here taking a million photos of one stinking lamp to get the perfect shot! Well, my photo isn't perfect and my home decor isn't all that fabulous, so this is me and I'm keeping it real ya'll! OK, I don't ever say ya'll...but it sound funny right?! 

On to the lamp that I have a love hate relationship with...

See how brilliant the actual lamp is, the details and the color? But then there is this boring, no personality shade on top...I mean what is that?! We've actually had this lamp for a few years now, and for the last year or so I've really wanted to do something to the shade and have been on the hunt for cool DIY lamp shade ideas.

I love this Shape Tape™ trick that Jess did over on East Coast Creative...

It's a pretty simple idea, yet it makes such a big difference to a boring, white lamp shade. I would love to try this in a mint or a navy color. 

Oh, and how amazing is this handwritten letter lamp shade DIY from Courtney over on A Little Glass Box...

Besides the lamp being pretty fabulous all on it's own (I mean, it's a horse!), the lamp shade is too. My step-daughter actually did this to her lamp shade, she has been putting together some really cool DIY projects lately, like this industrial lamp idea she created from two wire hanging planters...

She was inspired by an episode of Knock it Off, which is on the Live Well Network and stars Monica and Jess from East Coast Creative (the blog I'm an assistant for!)

Good Books to Read

I don't know about you, but for me, if an author wants to make my list of good books to read, then s/he must grab my attention from the very first page. I need to feel engaged and connected to the character or it's a bust. So, I'm not sure if it's because I'm a big fan of Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, or because I just didn't enjoy the writing, but I couldn't get into Veronica Roth's Divergent...gasp!

For me, the first few pages of Divergent read too similar to The Hunger Games; talking about their mothers, their hair, the "big day"... on the service both books are about a teenage girl fighting back against society. I know I can't really go on too much about one versus the other since I haven't read Divergent yet, so I'm asking you what your thoughts are if you have read both. Are you a big Katniss fan, but have also found a love for Tris? Do you already have your tickets for the Divergent movie premiere this weekend? I plan on reading Divergent so I can better evaluate and discuss the differences, but right now I am really into Nicholas Sparks. So, it may also have been the fact that at the moment I'm in the romance novel zone and not really in the mood for a sci-fi thriller! Tris, I shall come back to you!

Speaking of Nicholas Sparks, have you read any of his novels or do you only watch the movies based on them? A few years ago, shortly after watching The Notebook, I read Three Weeks with My Brother, which is a memoir Sparks wrote with his brother Micah Sparks. My husband and I read it together and really enjoyed learning about the history of Sparks' family and were inspired by the journey he took with his brother around the world to the Mayan ruins, Easter Island and beyond. 

Believe it or not, when I read Three Weeks with My Brother, it was the first and only Sparks novel I had picked up. It wasn't until this year that I would finally return to his novels and obsess over the need to read them all! I was writing a post for AWS, 7 Best Nicholas Sparks Inspired Movies, when I was inspired to read A Walk to Remember. I had seen the movie starring Mandy Moore and Shane West, but not until I wrote the post did I learn how different the setting of the book was and felt that it was imperative that I truly learned the story of Jamie and Landon. The film is set in the 90's, while the novel was set in the 50's, which is the era I believe I should have been born in! 

I just recently finished True Believer, and after you have seen all of Nicholas Sparks' inspired movies you have this fear that one of the main characters is going to pass away. I was on the edge of my seat thinking, "Please no one die, please stay together and have a happy ending!" It was a unique story about science versus mystery, or fact versus faith. If there isn't any scientific fact to back up what is happening, what others are saying, do you still believe, do you have faith that it's real even if science says otherwise? What happens when one person, Jeremy, believes in discovering the truth using science, while another person, Lexie, just has faith and doesn't need science to back up the feeling that she believes is real? Well, you'll have to find out for yourself when you read True Believer! 

Next, still sitting closed on the side of my bed since I purchased it last week is Sparks' newest release, The Longest Ride. As I was standing in Barnes & Noble, I was again captured by the very first page, like all of Sparks' novels I have read so far. So, why is it still sitting closed, well life gets in the way of a great book sometimes!

St. Patrick's Day Round Up

Is it just me, or does it seem like there are more St. Patrick's Day recipes and crafts on Pinterest this year than ever before? Don't get me wrong, I am loving all of the ideas, but I can't remember the holiday being this celebrated online as much...but then again maybe I'm just following more DIY blogs now that I'm a blog assistant for East Coast Creative!

So, to jump in on the holiday fun I thought I would put together a little St. Patrick's Day round up, here are a few of my favorites...

For Christmas a few years ago I made peppermint oreos from a recipe that blogger Jamielyn posted on I Heart Nap Time, everyone loved them and wanted me to share the recipe. Homemade sandwich cookies can be time consuming to make, but the results are amazing, plus your family and friends will be really impressed. How adorable are these green velvet shamrock whoopie pies from Homemade by Holman? If it's a little late to make these this year, definitely Pin for next year! 

Since the holiday is already upon us, this DIY banner from Simple As That can work for other holidays like Easter, Independence Day, or even birthday parties. But, if you are looking for a quick, fun decor idea for your classroom or home for St. Patrick's Day (which is tomorrow), it probably wouldn't take too long to make this. 

Cake makes everything better, right? My step-daughters made the most amazing blue velvet cake for my birthday, and two minutes after I posted a photo of my cake on Facebook, I saw this green velvet cake on my news feed from Recipe Girl...how ironic is that?! Surprise your kids or significant other tomorrow with this delicious cake and see how shocked they are when they cut into it to see that it's green!

If you're lucky in love like I am, than this St. Patrick's Day striped shamrock printable from Lolly Jane will work for the holiday and can stay up year round. I've seen a few free printables on Pinterest with shamrocks, but this is one of my favorites. I also love this friendship printable over on Occasionally Crafty. 

If you love Shamrock Shakes, but would rather not worry about the calories, then check out this tasty little treat from A Night Owl Blog that is sugar free! I mean, if you're celebrating St. Patrick's Day tomorrow, you have to have a Shamrock Shake! 

Is this moss Shamrock not the coolest St. Patrick's Day wreath you've ever seen?! The trick is to take one of those tinsel shamrock wreaths that they sell in craft stores and remove the tinsel, glue on a paper backing, then glue on your moss, easy peasy! Stop by The House That Lars Built for the complete step by step tutorial. 

If your kids are celebrating St. Patrick's Day in school tomorrow, this little flower pot turned leprechaun hat DIY from Life in Wonderland would make a cute desk decoration for their classroom party. It's also a clever idea for a St. Patrick's Day themed wedding for place card holders.

Happies & Crappies: Signs of Spring!

YAY, there are finally signs of Spring popping up and it makes my heart smile! I feel like I need a fresh start and Spring will help with that. The start of 2014 has been a crazy one and I'd like for it to go a little smoother, a little slower, and a little happier. 

Thank you to those who stopped by on my last Happies & Crappies post, I promise to check out your blogs; life gets a little busy around here sometimes but I am trying to schedule things better. I am also thinking of revamping my blog and going to WordPress, seems like the thing to do lately in the blog world. If you notice though, I actually just changed it from a three column to a two column, it was getting too busy looking. I really want to start paying attention to my blog more, perhaps make a Facebook page for it and get a few sponsors once I get traffic picked up. 

I started this blog right before we got engaged so I mostly blogged about our wedding details with a little real life (holidays, birthdays, fun weekend events) thrown in the mix. But, what kind of blogger am I really? There are fashion bloggers, DIY bloggers, mommy bloggers, wedding bloggers, etc. but I feel like I don't really fit into one of those molds, but I want to have a community like those bloggers do. Is there a community for Real Life Bloggers?!

Happies:

 Most of my happies in March come from it being my birthday month, the start of Spring, and the Philadelphia Flower Show! I won't go too picture crazy on you, but here are a few of my favorites from this week and last! 

We headed to the Reading Terminal for lunch before going to the Flower Show, and wow it was such a great idea! You have to locate Molly Malloy's next time you're there, the butternut squash soup was amazing and so fresh. They first opened up with a produce shop and then a restaurant. The fries were hand cut and the cheesesteak might just have been the best ever! 

The theme for this year's Philadelphia Flower Show was Articulture and I heard that next year's theme is Hollywood, which I'm already looking forward to! It's not just about the show, but for the last few years my mom and I have been going together for my birthday and it now has become a tradition of ours. We go down around noon time, get lunch, and then spend the day and into the night at the show and enjoy the free wine sampling that starts at 5:30 pm in the convention center right outside the doors of the Flower Show...what's not to love about that! We take public transportation down, so no worries about driving!  

Each year there is a live show of some kind at the main floral exhibit, during the Hawaiian theme they had hula dancers and this year they had trapeze artists, it was pretty exciting to watch (you can see them in the top left photo). In the middle are the most adorable frogs I've ever seen, they were part of my high school's exhibit (graduated in 2001!). The two photos after the frogs are from the main exhibit, also where my mom and I are standing in front of. The last photo, well who doesn't love tulips, right?! I can't wait for ours to bloom in the little "garden" we have in front of our house. YAY Spring!

How blessed am I? My friends and family really helped 31 feel even just as amazing as 30! It all started with a surprise gift card to Barnes & Noble that came in the mail from miss Heather over at High Heels & Flip-Flops, such a sweetheart. I actually got the chance to meet her in person and can't wait to hang out again sometime! Oh, and then my friend Katie created this incredible custom and one of a kind tote bag for me! She also created journal cards for my Project Life album, pretty awesome right?! She is actually in the middle of starting her own blog, which isn't up yet but for now you can check her out on Facebook at Busy Bee Kate (love her blog name).

Saw this little guy hopping around outside today and just had to take his photo. Also loving the fact that we can finally see green grass in our yard instead of blinding white snow that has been piled up for two months now! Signs of Spring indeed! 

Crappies

I have been feeling a little uneasy lately, just a lot of bad, emotional days of feeling lost and in the middle of not knowing what's next. Also, I feel like I just don't have the motivation to workout right now...Jillian Michaels I need you to push me again! If only she were my real life physical trainer! I did get on the treadmill today, but not as long as I wanted to, but it's a start... GO ME!!

OK, it's almost the weekend and we have house guests coming! My best friend from college is coming with her hubby, and two little ones. I can't believe their daughter is now 6 and their baby boy is going to be 1 in June! 

Also a Big Happy Birthday to my older sister, she turned 33 the day before my birthday...we're 2 years and 1 day apart! 

Can you tell we grew up in the 80's?! My younger sister is the baby in the top right photo, there's three of us...yep my dad had to put up with four women in the house, lucky him!
